AIRCRAFT GROUND POWER UNITS (GPU)
WHAT IS A GPU?
When on the ground an aircraft cannot use the domestic 50 Hz or 60 Hz power. Consequently, whilst parked in the airport apron stand the aircraft utilises the ground support equipment (GSE) to switch its on board service loads and navigation avionics to a 400Hz frequency converter.
THE BENEFITS OF GPU'S
The major benefit to using a “point of use” frequency converter is that it is very energy efficient. The GPU only needs to be switched on when it is needed, which means there is no need continue running the aircraft’s engines and the on board turbo generator auxiliary power unit (APU). The 400 Hz frequency convertor eliminates noise and air pollution, unnecessary fuel consumption and contributes to the reduction of maintenance needed on the APU, generators and batteries.

400 Hz/28 V FREQUENCY CONVERTORS (Combo Unit)
Frequency Converters utilise the latest in power conversion switching technology to provide aircraft with an extremely flexible and cost effective 400 Hz power source for installation at convenient “point of use” locations and in avionics workshops, aircraft maintenance hangars and test laboratories where low noise, ease of use and compact dimensions are demanded.
In contrast to 400 Hz systems, found in many older airports, the SP frequency converters have an inherently high power factor of up to 0.98 with a sine wave input low harmonics rectifier input stage. The inverter is an advanced design using high frequency pulse width modulation producing a sine wave output through an integral isolation transformer and via a circuit breaker for indoor use, or with optional contactors for outdoor use.
The frequency converter can be delivered with a single output or dual output circuits and fitted with industrial type of multiple socket outlets or could be supplied with flexible 400Hz power cables and supplementary sensing fitted with standard aircraft power connectors.
The frequency converters are supplied with 115V single phase output up to 40kVA and from 10 KVA to 180 KVA with three phase output.
The basic mechanical construction is in vertical format with ingress protection IP20 with optional IP42 and IP54, there is a horizontal version available for mounting on a mobile trolley, trailer or on floor stands. Contact us today for more information.
28 V DC FREQUENCY CONVERTOR

There is little audible noise, no vibration, toxic exhaust fumes or environmental pollution as produced by diesel driven systems or when the aircraft is running its engines or APU. This series of mobile power units is designed to deliver the aircraft engine peak starting current of up to 2,400A and will keep the battery fully charged whilst the aircraft is on the ground thus reducing battery stress and preserving the life expectancy of the expensive on board aircraft batteries.
The standard AS series 28V DC ground power unit is constructed in an all welded sturdy press formed steel enclosure, rust inhibited and painted in colours and finish to suit individual customer requirements. The converter enclosure upper section top is fitted with handling bars at each end for one person positioning, the base frame section is fitted with lockable swivelling wheels.
The RS range is smaller and lighter and designed to be positioned as close to the aircraft as possible, and the series comes with wheels and rugged handles for manual handling. The unit comes with a longer 50 or 60Hz input cable, and shorter output DC cable to reduce the considerable costs and weight of DC Cable.
Finally the PS range is designed to offer the most flexibility where the aircrafts could required 400Hz power or 28 V DC. This also comes in static and mobile options.
Units can be offered with a stainless steel casing, for the harsher environments.
The units can also handle a wide range of operating environments, with temperature ranges of -20c to +60c, and come with IP ratings of up to IP 54. Contact us today for more information.
